5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Solution to carrying a high quality lock, January 22, 2011

This review is from: Abus Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500 Foldable Lock - 85cm (Sports)
This lock solves the problem of taking along a high security lock with you everywhere you go without having to worry about throwing a heavy ulock or chain into a back pack or some other uncomfortable way to cary those things. I can appreciate the quality of, say, a Kryptonite New York Mini, but if they don't make a way to carry the thing, what good is it? I don't like to bike ride loaded down with back packs or racks or holsters off my belt. This thing so compact yet solid, it should serve you well for leaving your bike while your at a store, restaurant, etc. I'd likely include a ulock as well for those day long or overnight situations. Better yet, I'd keep my bike indoors in those cases. No lock is thief proof, but this is about as close as you're going to get. Plus, it's super easy to pack along with you. See my pics on the Cannondale in this listing.

If you're looking for a light-weight lock, look elsewhere! This thing is HEAVY. I just received it, but its build quality really makes me believe it'll protect my Kona crossbike in metro Washington DC. I'm sure every lock can be defeated given enough time and the proper tools, but I'm sure the 6500 rates up there with the best U/D locks (look at the YouTube videos). The main reason I went with the 6500 was because of the "carry-ability" -- for that, I'm very pleased. The included mounting "pouch" is very high quality and includes both high-quality straps and the ability to mount to water-bottle lugs. I went with the water-bottle lugs, and it allows the lock to be stowed and transported almost unnoticed.

My only negative comment is the lock could be coated with a softer/rubbery material. It's pretty much painted steel, so it's more prone to scratching the bike than it should be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Carry, Tough Lock, September 21, 2010

This review is from: Abus Bordo Granit X-Plus 6500 Foldable Lock - 85cm (Sports)
I initially bought this as the primary lock for my new Batavus bike. I live in Toronto where bicycle theft is not uncommon.

This lock is very compact. The carrying case is very well made, unlike the ones from Kryptonite. It will fit just about any bike. It's made of thick rubber and hugs the lock really well. I don't hear it rattling while on the road. This lock is very easy to carry.

The steel beam I lock my bike to in my backyard is, unfortunately, too thick and I had to get the Abus City Chain. However, I still do use the Abus Bordo to lock up my front wheel to the frame.

It might seem ridiculous to some people because I use three-hundred-fifty dollars' worth of locks, but I'm willing to pay that price to protect my $1,600 bike. I'm also paying for my peace of mind.

The locking mechanism is very smooth. I oiled it once after heavy rains and it worked like new again.

Some cons:
- Expensive (but I'm sure it's great German... Read more
